Closed days

  • Every Monday (However, when Monday falls on a national holiday or August 6, the library will open.)
  • The day following a holiday when applicable under the Law pertaining to National Holidays. (However, when the National Holiday falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, the library will close on the next weekday.)
  • Library inventory day-the last day of the odd months. However, when the last day of the month falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, inventory is the preceding Friday.
  • Year-end and New Year holidays (December 29 - January 4. However, when January 4 falls on a Monday, the holidays end on January 5.)
  • Special inventory periods(book/periodical inspection) .(This period varies with the library.)

How to use the library

Getting a library card

  • You need a library card to borrow a book.
  • Any resident of Hiroshima or the following ten cities and twelve towns is eligible for a library card: Kure City, Takehara City, Otake City, Higashi Hiroshima City, Hatsukaichi City, Akitakata City, Etajima City, Iwakuni City, Yanai City, Akiota Town, Kita Hiroshima Town, Fuchu Town, Kaita Town, Kumano Town, Saka Town, Osaki Kamijima Town, Sera Town, Suo Oshima Town, Waki Town, Kaminoseki Town and Hirao Town.
  • Anyone who commutes to office or school within Hiroshima city is also eligible for the card.
  • To apply for a library card, fill out the application form and show a form of personal identification (certificate of alien registration, driver’s license, health insurance card, student card, etc.) to the librarian.
  • The library card is valid at all Hiroshima City libraries.

How to check out a book

  • One library card allows its owner to check out ten books from any city library for two weeks. Place the books you want on the circulation desk along with your library card. The librarian will take you through the check-out procedure.

How to return a book

  • Place the book on the return shelf. You don’t need the card to return a book.
  • To return a book after library hours, place it in the book drop located on the premises of each library.

To reserve a book

  • One person may reserve up to twenty books.
  • Only Hiroshima City library card holders may reserve books.

Copy service

  • Copying of materials owned by the city libraries is permitted within the bounds of the Copyright Law. (monochrome copy = 10 yen per copy,color copy = 20 yen per copy)

Library events

  • Every library sponsors a variety of events for public enjoyment: reading groups, book clubs, lectures, and the like. We invite you to participate.
